What an Automatic Gate Actually Costs on the Gold Coast

Ask three Gold Coast gate companies for a price and you'll get three very different numbers, because 'an automatic gate' covers everything from a motor added to your existing gate to a custom double swing gate on an acreage entrance. Here's how to make sense of it.

The two very different jobs

**Automating an existing gate** is the cheaper path by a wide margin. If you already have a sound gate that moves freely, you're paying for a motor, safety sensors, a control board and your choice of controls — not a new gate. This commonly starts in the low thousands.

**A supplied-and-installed automatic gate** is a different order of cost, because you're buying the gate as well. A standard aluminium sliding or swing gate with automation more typically runs from several thousand dollars up, and a large custom gate or a grand acreage entrance can run to $10,000–$15,000 or beyond.

Those are broad ranges on purpose — the point is the category you're in, not a precise figure.

What moves the number

**Gate size and weight.** A wider, heavier gate needs a bigger motor and stronger posts, and the gate itself costs more to fabricate. This is the single biggest driver.

**The motor and battery backup.** A quality serviceable motor with parts available locally costs more than a throwaway unit, and it's worth it — the cheap motor is the expensive one when it fails in three years and nobody can source a board.

**Cabling runs.** Power to the gate, and cabling for an intercom or keypad, all cost more the further they run. A gate close to the house and the meter box is cheaper to wire than one at the end of a long drive.

**Access control.** A basic remote is cheap. A video intercom, keypad and app control add genuine cost — worth it for a busy household, but it's a real line item.

**Ground and posts.** Rock, fill or a sloping driveway all add labour, and heavy gates need properly footed posts. The unseen groundwork is where cheap quotes quietly save money.

**Solar.** On acreage, a solar setup adds cost over a mains motor but usually saves far more than trenching a long power cable would.

Where cheap quotes find their savings

Almost always in the parts you can't see on the day: an undersized motor run at its limit, lightweight posts that will lean within a year, skipped or disabled safety sensors, and non-coastal hardware that rusts. On the Gold Coast the hardware spec matters — salt air punishes shortcuts.

Questions worth asking every quote

Is the motor sized for my gate's weight and how often I'll use it, and are spare parts available locally? Are safety sensors and battery backup included? What are the posts and footings? Is the hardware rated for the coastal environment? Is this a written, itemised quote?
